Beginning our sutra service

I vow with all beings To join my voice with all voices And give life to each word as it comes. —Robert Aitken

Language cannot reach it, hearing and seeing cannot touch it. In this single beam of illumination, you genuinely wander in practice. Use your vitality to enact this.—Hongzhi Zhengjue

Words do not convey the fact; language is not an expedient. Attached to words, your life is lost; blocked by phrases, you are bewildered. —Wumen Huikai

A poem is not a puzzle that the dutiful reader is obliged to solve. It is meant to poke you, get you to buck up, pay attention, rise and shine, look alive, get a grip, get the picture, pull up your socks, wake up and die right. —Garrison Keillor

  • Ø Ø D The Heart of the Perfection of Great Wisdom Sutra
  • Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva doing deep prajña paramita perceived the emptiness of all five Ø conditions, and was freed of fear. O Shariputra, form is no other than emptiness; emptiness no other than form. Form is precisely emptiness; emptiness precisely form. Sensation, perception, reaction, and consciousness are also like this. O Shariputra, all things are expressions of emptiness: not born, not destroyed; not stained, not pure; neither waxing nor waning. Thus, emptiness is not form, not sensation or perception, reaction or consciousness. No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind. No color, sound, smell, taste, touch, thing. No realm of sight ¼ No realm of consciousness. No ignorance; no end to ignorance ¼ No old age and death; no cessation of old age and death. No suffering; no cause or end to suffering. No path, no wisdom, and no gain. No gain: Thus, bodhisattvas live this prajña paramita Ø with no hindrance of mind. No hindrance, therefore no fear. Far beyond all such delusion, nirvana is already here. All past, present, and future buddhas live this prajña paramita Ø and attain supreme perfect enlightenment. Therefore, know that prajña paramita is the holy mantra, the luminous mantra, the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra by which all suffering is cleared. This is no other than truth. Therefore, set forth the prajña paramita mantra, set forth this mantra and proclaim: Gate, gate, · paragate parasamgate, · bodhi svaha! D

Homage to the relics of the Buddha of complete merit; Homage to the body of truth which is truth itself and a stupa for the world of the dharma for the benefit of our present body. Though the merits of Buddha, the truth enters into us and we enter into the truth. Though the excellent power of Buddha, we realize the truth. Let us do only good for all living things that we may possess the true mind. Let us do only pure deeds that we may enter the peaceful world which is unchanging, great wisdom. Let us pay homage eternally to the Buddha.

First Service Dedication

Ino:

Buddha Nature pervades the whole universe, existing right here, now. In reciting [name of sutra] we dedicate its merits to:

  1. Our original teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha Daiosho; the all-pervading and everlasting Three Treasures; all arhats and bodhisattva-mahasattvas, and their relations throughout space and time.
  2. May our sincere vows to accomplish the enlightened way be realized together.Ø All buddhas throughout space and time;Maha prajña paramita. D

D The Harmony of Relative and Absolute

ÆThe mind of the great sage of India

Is intimately conveyed west and east.

Among human beings are wise ones and fools.

In the way there is no teacher of north or south.

The subtle Source is clear and bright,

The branching streams flow in the dark.

To be attached to things is primordial illusion,

To encounter the absolute is not yet enlightenment.

Æ All spheres, every sense and field

Intermingle even as they shine alone.

Interacting even as they merge,

Yet keeping their places as expressions of their own.

Forms differ primally in shape and character,

And sounds in harsh or soothing tones.

The dark makes all words one,

The brightness distinguishes good and bad phrases.

The four elements return to their true nature

As a child to its mother.

Fire is hot, water is wet,

Wind moves and the earth is dense.

Eye and form, ear and sound, nose and smell,

Tongue and taste, the sweet and sour.

Each independent of the other

Like leaves that come from the same root.

And though leaves and root must go back to the source,

Both root and leaves have their own uses.

Light is also darkness,

But do not move with it as darkness.

Darkness is light,

Do not see it as light.

Light and darkness are not one, not two,

Like the foot before and the foot behind in walking.

Æ Each thing has its own being,

Which is not different from its place and function.

The relative fits the absolute

As a box and its lid.

The absolute meets the relative

Like two arrow points that touch high in the air.

Æ Hearing this, simply perceive the Source,

Make no criterion.

If you do not see the way,

You do not see it even as you walk on it.

When you walk the way you draw no nearer,

Progress no further.

Who fails to see this

Is mountains and rivers away.

  • Listen, those who would pierce this subtle matter:
  • Do not waste your time by night or day! D

Æ By this practice I sincerely wish to extend all my love to:

  • My own being, friends, enemies, family, and community, and to all creations for so much done on my behalf.
  • May those who practice in this sphere continue to empower, to enrich, to enjoy.
  • May those who have gone be released from suffering and nourish peacefulness.
  • May all creations in the three worlds receive the fourfold benefactions.
  • May those suffering on the three paths come to atonement and be cleansed of all their ills.
  • May they be liberated from samsara and arise in the Pure Land together.

Memorial Dedication I

Ino:

The Buddha turns the Dharma wheel

And so reality is shown in all its many forms.

He frees all suffering sentient beings

And awakens them to great joy.

We sincerely ask the beneficent guidance

Of the Three Treasures.

In reciting [name of sutra], and in offering (name offerings), we dedicate its merits to:

  • [Names], and to all beings in the dharma worlds.

  • May penetrating light dispel the darkness of ignorance.

Let all karma be resolved and the mind-flower bloom in eternal spring.

May we ascend to the throne of enlightenment

and realize the enlightened way together.

All: Æ All buddhas throughout space and time.

Æ All bodhisattva-mahasattvas.

Æ Maha + prajña + paramita. + ++++++++

Memorial Dedication II

Ino:

Vast ocean of dazzling light, marked by the waves of life and death. The tranquil passage embodies the forms of new and old, coming and going. We devoutly aspire to true compassion. In reciting [name of sutra], we dedicate its merits to his/her true nature in deepest gratitude.

Æ All bodhisattva-mahasattvas.

Æ Maha + prajña + paramita. + ++++++++

Autumnal Eqinox

In the Dharma world there is no increase, no decrease;

no coming, no going; no beginning, no ending.

Out of infinite compassion Buddhas appear in this transient world

and continuously convey the unsurpassed, penetrating and perfect Dharma.

On this day we celebrate the Autumn Equinox and enter the turning of the season from summer to fall, from light to dark; we have gathered here with the setting sun, offered flowers, incense and light

and we have chanted the Heart of Great Perfect Wisdom Sutra, the merit of which we offer to:

Our great original teacher Shakyamuni Buddha

To all Bodhisattva Mahasattvas

To Eihei Dogen Daiosho

To Shogaku Shunryu Daiosho

May our practice in this new season flower into big, joyful and compassionate mind for ourselves and all beings. ~
